Check in here to see what we've been up to...

We launched our Iechyd Da topic by getting outdoors. We are going to be learning about the rivers and mountains of Wales and beyond, and we talked about where rivers come from. By pouring water from a watering can we were able to see how rain water behaves, finding its own route. We noticed that some of the water soaked into the ground, some formed a lake, and some dried up. After this, we used Google maps to follow the course of the River Taff from its source, through Pontypridd and onwards until it reaches Cardiff Bay and the Severn Estuary.

Summer Term! At last, some good weather so we explored our school grounds to see what changes we could find. We noticed some new additions to our outdoor environment - nesting boxes for swifts, house martins and swallows, new trees, and wildlife enjoying the better weather. Hope it lasts!

Congratulations to these shining stars for completing all the activities and exercises for strengthening self-esteem, confidence, positive thinking and self-belief from Dr Karen Treisman's Gilly The Giraffe Self-Esteem Activity Book.

We enjoyed our cricket engagement session this week with Tom from @TFCricketWales.Cool Catcher, Super Strike and Brilliant Bowler skills!

We wanted to find out which magnet is the strongest. We cane to with different ways to test this and learned how to record our findings in a table.

We had some fun on #RedNoseDay and learned how laughter and connecting with others can be good for our mental health and well-being. The class decided to hold a Red Nose Run to show support for @comicrelief

We had a great day at @Techniquest, including a show in the Science Theatre about the significant contribution of Welsh scientists

World Book Day: book swap. Children brought in a book they no longer want to exchange for a 'new' one #WorldBookDay

St David's Day in Dosbarth Elder

Wow! What a great response to our home task! Look at these fabulous creations made from re-used material. Da iawn!

We concluded #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek by sharing the story of Gilly The Giraffe and How She Learned to Love Herself. We wore our favourite clothes to 'express ourselves' to support the @Place2Be #MyVoiceMatters campaign. We shared some of the work that we have been doing in class based on the book.

To mark #SaferInterntDay, we became digital detectives to sort out fact from fiction about AI with #BBCLiveLessons. We learned how AI is used in face-recognition software when we use filters on our phone cameras, and to recommend videos and searches online. We also learned about how AI can be used to create deep-fake videos. We created posters to share what we learned.Stay safe online!

Thanks to Rhys from @Technocamps for a fantastic session of computer science. Great teamwork from the children and a chance to develop our coding skills as we programmed our Lego robots to breakdance!

We took advantage of some fine weather to complete our 'leg' of the Reindeer Run. We all completed 20 laps, which equalled one and a half miles.Thank you to everyone who sponsored the children!

As a reward for super behaviour and good attendance, the class had 30 minutes of free choice on Friday afternoon. Craft, art and games - without a laptop or iPad in sight!

More outdoor learning - we all worked together to collect fallen leaves to make compost. We can't wait to find out what happens! @RHSSchools

Children in Need Day: we played Pin The Bandage on Pudsey and Bear Pong as well as some other games we made up ourselves. We learned how to make a box from the net of a cube and solved maths problems to complete a colouring challenge. Thank you for your donations for this worthy cause.

We worked individually, in pairs and groups to develop dance sequences based on the life of the children who worked in coal mines in the nineteenth century. We focused on action, space and movement, and refined our compositions. We evaluated each others' performances and gave constructive feedback. Da iawn, pawb!

Some of the children made sure our poppies were on display again in time for Remembrance Day. We designed our own poppies to take home.

Outdoor Learning: this week, we have been out enjoying the Autumn weather! We collected leaves and learned to identify some of our native trees from the shape of their leaves. We investigated leaf rubbings to find out the most effective method.

We ended a fun and busy term with some Halloween High Intensity Interval Training with @SportRCT

Halloween Creativity: getting crafty with Miss Akers and Mrs Rogers

The children took part in a non-uniform day in support of Show Racism The Red Card. We talked about racism and learned about the life of Welsh miner Idris Phillips and how he suffered racism in his village. We worked together to create a timeline of his life and used this to write his biography

World Mental Health Day! Today, we talked about how we all have mental health. We learned that our mental health is all about our feelings, our thoughts, our emotions and our moods. We discussed how talking to someone about our feelings can help, and thought about who we could turn to if we feel sad, worried, angry or confused. The children shared their strategies for helping them manage difficult feelings. We finished by learning how to complete a personal 'mood tracker'.

Rhondda Heritage Museum - we had a fascinating tour of the coal mine and enjoyed a craft activity in the gallery, followed by a good look around the exhibition. What a great trip!

This week, we have been celebrating European Day of languages. We started by discussing the various international languages that we speak or are learning. Then we took part in a quiz to test our knowledge of countries and languages spoken in Europe and around the world. The children decided they wanted to find out more and worked in groups to research countries of choice. We are looking forward to learning more about languages at Llwyncrwn!

The Year 3 children were very excited to begin their ‘First Experiences’ programme: half a term of musical instrument taster sessions, delivered by a trained and skilled music practitioner.

The class enjoyed their topic launch day, sharing their unique talents and interests and finding out more about each other. We heard about owning a pet, dancing, rugby, football, cheerleading, roller skating, Lego construction, gaming and playing the kazoo! What a talented bunch!

We spent some time on our first day in Dosbarth Elder getting to know each other (and our teacher). Great speaking and listening skills were on display as we found out about pets, skills, hobbies and favourite foods.

We talked about what we need from each other in order to give of our best in our class. Our top needs were: love, hope, trust, friendship and respect. We discussed what we would need to do to ensure that these needs were met, to help develop our Class Charter.
